Embodied Emotions and Others

This week we’re going to focus on exploring how emotions show up in our bodies. We can start such an exploration from an understanding of feelings as a combination of arising thoughts and bodily-based emotions. Without perceptual clarity (which can be developed through insight meditation) this combination is often perceived as one entangled whole.

We’ll work on perceiving the bodily-based emotions while disregarding the layer of thoughts which often accompany them. Gaining perceptual clarity over over our emotions as they show up in an embodied way is essential for unraveling our true behavioural motivations arising in many situations and thus opens up many opportunities for learning about how we work as people.

We’ll tune up with a body-based concentration practice and then work through two different embodied emotion meditations. The second of these will be a social meditation designed to bridge our understanding from the intra-personal into the inter-personal since this is where stronger emotions tend to show up anyways.
