The Science of Enlightenment by Shinzen Young | Mastering the Core Teachings of the Buddha by Daniel Ingram | Seeing That Frees by Rob Burbea |

In the words of meditation teacher Michael Taft, “this is not a practice manual, but more of a transmission of the spirit of meditation”. | The style isn’t for everyone, but this is the best meditation guide book/manual you’ll find. If you buy just one meditation book, it should be this one. Ingram’s phenomenological descriptions are exceptional. [Read online] | This is the best book I’ve found on the key Buddhist concept of emptiness. This is a specific definition of emptiness and not what typically comes to mind in English. |

The Mind Illuminated by Culadasa | Practical Insight Meditation by Mahasi Sayadaw | Contemplative Fitness by Kenneth Folk |

This book is full of great descriptions, helpful tips and diagrams. I favour the more insight heavy methods outlined in Ingram’s book, such as noting, but I’d recommend reading this anyways. | Mahasi Sayadaw’s classic short book on noting. [Read online: part 1 (epub), part 2 (epub)] | This book is actually still a work-in-progress, but it’s a good shorter introduction to the nuts and bolts of meditation. In a similar vein to Ingram’s book but more concise. [Read online, epub] |
