Becoming Better Phenomenologists

Meditation is mostly a private endeavour. But we live in a world with other beings. We may have many incredible experiences during and because of mediation, and no one really knows exactly what you experience but yourself. However, we can try to share our experiences and insights as best we can with the powerful tool of language.

Language is the cornerstone of civilisation. It is the game-changing psycho-technology that allows abstract ideas to be exchanged among organisms which allows them to coordinate in ways otherwise impossible. If we can’t effectively communicate with one another, then we either ignore each other and when that doesn’t work violence often becomes the alternative.

Most issues I see in relationships stem from an inability of people to express themselves in a clear, compassionate, multi-layered way that also takes into consideration the other person’s perspective.

Being able to describe the details of your experience is a skill that you can get better at. Too often people resort to parroting cliches of spiritual phrases and jargon that they heard from someone else. But when you take the time to understand yourself better and learn how to put it into words, you not only learn to understand others better but also help others understand you better too.
